Burnaston Parish Council held an online meeting with land promoters and their professional project team to receive updates and discuss next steps relating to land being promoted for development.

The summary below reflects the matters discussed at the meeting.

Introductions and context

The meeting was chaired by Cllr Sally Price, in the absence of the Chair. All attendees introduced themselves and outlined their roles.

Members of the project team explained their involvement in planning, design and environmental work associated with the land being promoted.

Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) scoping submission

The project team provided an update on the submission of an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) scoping report to South Derbyshire District Council.

The purpose of the EIA scoping process, the validation stage, and the next steps were explained. The document is currently under validation and will be made available for public consultation once this process is complete.

Media and communications

The project team noted that there has already been some media coverage and shared a summary article during the meeting. It was also noted that further media coverage is expected once the EIA is published.

Land use and master planning

The project team presented updates to the land use and illustrative master plan, reflecting feedback received from workshops and site visits.

Key updates included:

  • A larger site identified for a proposed primary school

  • New green corridors

  • Improved connections through the site

  • Changes near Whitehaven to help address concerns relating to noise, lighting and access

Active travel and footpaths

Discussion took place on proposals to upgrade Millway Lane as the main active travel route, including potential surfacing, lighting and junction safety improvements.

Other public rights of way are expected to remain. Concerns were raised about safety and usage, with further details to be developed.

Consultation and next steps

The project team confirmed that pre-application public consultation is planned for the new year. This is expected to include:

  • In-person events in Burnaston and Pastures

  • An online webinar

A project website is live https://mickleoversouth.co.uk/ and will be updated with additional information as plans are finalised.

Engagement with stakeholders

Updates were provided on engagement with the local MP’s team and South Derbyshire District Council officers. No new issues were raised beyond those discussed at the meeting.

Venue for consultation events

Possible venues for public consultation events were discussed. It was agreed that the social club would be used, despite management concerns, due to its central location and accessibility.

Press protocol

The Parish Council discussed how to respond to media enquiries and agreed that responses would be provided once specific questions are received.

Actions agreed

  • The Parish Clerk will share links to media coverage and the EIA documentation once it becomes publicly available

  • The project team will finalise and share updated illustrative plans and supporting studies for parish feedback

  • The project team will organise in-person and online consultation events, coordinate venue booking with the Parish Clerk, and update the project website

  • The Parish Council will review and provide feedback on proposals relating to Millway Lane, footpath safety and other design elements as details are developed

  • Media responses will be coordinated by the Parish Council, with the Parish Clerk acting as the contact point
