Flooding information for Burnaston residents

Flooded agricultural fields after heavy rainfall, with standing water covering crops and fence posts, a flooded track running alongside trees, and rain falling across open countryside.

Flooding can happen for a number of reasons, including heavy rainfall or melting snow, surface water run-off, groundwater and smaller streams. The information below explains who is responsible and how residents can get help and stay informed.


Flood Wardens

The Flood Warden system is run by Derbyshire County Council.

Flood Wardens help share information locally and support communities before, during and after flooding events.

Who is responsible for flooding issues?

For Burnaston Parish, Derbyshire County Council is responsible for managing and investigating flood risk from:


  • Surface water (rainwater)

  • Groundwater

  • Smaller watercourses such as ditches and streams


Derbyshire County Council is known as the Lead Local Flood Authority.

Internal Drainage Boards

Some areas are covered by an Internal Drainage Board, which manages water levels to reduce flood risk.


Burnaston Parish is not covered by an Internal Drainage Board, so flood management in this area sits with Derbyshire County Council.
