Derby City Council has confirmed that it is approaching a key milestone in the preparation of the new Local Plan for Derby, which will guide how the city develops up to 2043.

In January 2026, the Council will launch an eight-week public consultation on the draft Local Plan. This consultation will invite residents, businesses, community groups and stakeholders to share their views on the proposed vision, strategy and planning policies for Derby’s future growth and development.

What is the Local Plan?

The Local Plan sets out planning policies that influence decisions on:

  • Housing and affordable homes

  • Employment and the local economy

  • Transport and movement

  • Climate change and the environment

  • Infrastructure and community facilities

  • The role and future of Derby city centre

Once adopted, the new Local Plan will replace the existing Derby City Local Plan documents and provide the framework for development across the city between 2023 and 2043.

What happens next?

  • The draft Local Plan consultation will run for eight weeks from January 2026

  • Two public consultation events are planned at Derby Market Hall on:

    • Saturday 31 January 2026

    • Saturday 21 February 2026

  • People who have registered for updates will receive notification when the consultation opens

  • Anyone not already on the consultation list can request updates by emailing PlanningPolicy@derby.gov.uk
