Anti-social behaviour (ASB) can have a real impact on how safe and comfortable we feel in our neighbourhood. While ASB is not always a criminal offence, some behaviours associated with it can cross the line into criminal activity.

It can often be confusing to know who to contact when you’re experiencing ASB. The police are not always the agency best placed to deal with every type of incident — for example, local authorities have specific powers to deal with noise nuisance and environmental issues.

That’s why it’s important that the police, local councils, and other agencies work together to identify and tackle the root causes of anti-social behaviour.

How to Report ASB

If you’re affected by ASB, please report it to both:

  • The Police – call 999 if a crime is in progress or someone is in danger, or 101 for non-emergencies.

  • South Derbyshire District Council – report online via Anti-social behaviour | South Derbyshire District Council or call 01283 595795.

When reporting an incident, try to include as much detail as possible:

  • Date and time of the incident

  • What happened

  • Who was involved

  • Who else was affected

It’s also helpful to keep a diary or log of incidents, including dates and times. This record can support investigations and help agencies take effective action.

Working Together

A number of organisations work in partnership to tackle ASB, and who you contact will depend on the situation and the impact the behaviour is having. The more information you provide, the easier it is for agencies to understand and resolve the problem.
